Search Engines (or, how to get found on the Internet)

One of the first things people often ask when they have a new website is, I went to Google and typed in my business name, or my field of business, why don't I come up? Here's our advice:

The most powerful Search Engine Optimisation tool: word of mouth

SEO shouldn't be about fiddling keywords to try and trick search engines into giving you a higher ranking. The best marketing you can do for yourself is to make people want to tell their friends, family and workmates about your site — especially on the Web where Google and other search engines can see them doing it!

How does word of mouth help?

Firstly, word of mouth increases your traffic, and the more that people talk about you on blogs or websites, the more likely it is that the search engines are going to sit up and take notice — this is how all the major search engines work these days, by trying to work out your "reputation".

Get people talking

A good way to do this is to think, what is something that we know a lot about that would interest people? Maybe you're a food company, as many of our clients are. Having some interesting recipes would be a good start. Remember though, you'll be competing with every other recipe site on the Internet. Read on for more ideas.

Enhance your reputation — put yourself forward as an expert

Write (or have written for you) articles or tutorials about your field of expertise, your products or services. Consider showing others how to do what you do at a basic level, or new ways to use your product or service.

The main advantages of this are:

  • It will increase your credibility and people's perception of your level of expertise
  • It will attract attention from websites that are related to your field. These are the sites that search engines like Google pay the most attention to when trying to assess your online reputation.
  • It will increase the amount of traffic to your site. Some of the people visiting your site because of this information will also be potential customers.
